The Second Day to Starting Over

The New Year began on a Saturday and to the procrastinator that gave you a way to push your start date back and say something like “I am going to start on Monday”. Well if that was you. You have some catching up to do. If you care about my story you can read that. It’s under The Art of Starting Over. More importantly you have to read The First Day to Starting Over because you missed picking your resolutions and your theme songs and those are very important steps to the big picture.

So read those two blog posts after you read this one.

The Second Day is exciting because on this day you will write down a way to bring harmony into your lifestyle. If you read my story you will remember that I said I gave too much of myself and I didn’t have anything left to give. Well on this day will make sure you do not make that same mistake.

Today you will write down:

1. What you plan to do for others in 2011. Include co-workers, family, friends, organizations and whom ever you plan to serve this year.

2. What you will do for yourself in 2011. Include any mental, emotional, physical or spiritual good things you will give yourself and ask for from other people. Please do not forget to ask others for the things you need in your life. Make sure you are fair. Give and receive in a way that creates harmony in your life. Make a list of 12 things that make you happy. This will help you figure out what to put on your list of things you will do for yourself.

I will give you three things I plan to do for others and three things I plan to do for myself. The list is longer but I don’t want to bore you.

What I will do for others: I will teach financial literacy classes with Operation Hope. I will take courtesy calls to pass down the gifts that where given to me. I will give more time to friends and family outside of work.

What I will do for myself: I will allow myself to take a full day off with no work. I will get hot stone massages once a month. I will ask another millionaire (Sean P. Diddy Combs) to mentor me.

Do these things and get ready for the next step.

Have you made resolutions in the past and broken them before January ended. So what! That was then this is now and you are learning The Art of Starting Over. The first thing you need to do today is write down three resolutions. The second thing you need to do is pick your theme songs.

I am going to share everything with you that I ask you to do. That is my commitment to you. I will be transparent throughout this entire process. We will first take some baby steps and prepare ourselves by doing some preliminary work then we will go through 12 of the 30 steps to The Art of Starting Over.

Your three resolutions are things you would like to stop doing this year. You may have more than three but I want you to pick the top three that you will committed to and write them down. Then I want you to pick songs that make you feel good. Songs that inspire or energize you. Every time you feel weak or powerless play your theme song(s) and pump yourself up.

My 3 resolutions are:
1. I will not lend any money in 2011 (If I decide to give a monetary gift I can but I will not lend.)
2. I am not going to obsess over anything or anybody. (Dear Lord help me with this one.)
3. My lifestyle will be 80% healthy and 20% unhealthy. (this includes my activity and diet)

My Theme songs are:
Whip My Hair (Willow Smith)
I’ma Be (Blackeyed Peas)
OMG (Usher)

OMG! I am so excited for us. I’ma Be happy and I’ll Whip My Hair (back and forth) when we are all at the top. (I’m so silly.)

The Art of Starting Over

It is 2011 and some of us are starting over (again). It may feel unwelcomed or it may feel great. Either way it is what it is. Make a commitment to get it right this time. You have to do the best with what you have. Some of the things in your life will have to go, while others need to stay in order to help you get where you need to be.

I have started over a few times myself. One of those times you may know about. It was after being on national television talking about one of my most personal secrets. Then last year I started over again and I decided to declare 2010 the beginning of the most amazing 10 years of my life. Now some of you know that my lifestyle is pretty amazing and I pursue my dreams everyday. That is still my attitude but I am adding a few things to that old attitude that will make me unstoppable and unmeasurably happy.

For those of you that don’t know in 2003 I was on ABCs Extreme Makeover. I had reconstructive surgery on my lips. It was the hardest thing I had ever done. I had to admit to myself that I didn’t like something about myself. Most people knew me as a confident person and that was because I worked very hard to get past the things I didn’t like. When I had the opportunity to fix the problem I put all pride aside and jumped on the opportunity. With a little luck, blessings and preparation I got a gift that I didn’t even know I was praying for. There is more to that story but I will give you more details as the journey continues. So let’s fast forward.

I was on top of the world. I was on Oprah, several TV shows. Got my SAG card and many celebrities knew me on a first name bases. I started a company and my partner and I were making great money. At the same time we were making one huge mistake. We were so happy that we could help others that we gave away too much. We gave away too much money, too much energy, too much love, too much time and way to much trust. Neither of us had enough left for ourselves, the company or others. That taught us both a very valuable lesson. There is more to this story too but it will come out as we go through the journey and you will learn some life lessons through my mistakes. So that brings me to the reason why I had to start over again.

I had the world right in the palm of my hand and I gave it away. Sometimes I believe God was proud of me but disappointed at the same time. So I prayed and I told God if you invest in me I will invest in your people. I mean it. When I post my 2011 resolutions you will see that I am not lending out any money in 2011 and you will think I am breaking my promise to God. I can’t help poor people if I am one of them.

The truth is if everyone who owes me money would pay it back I wouldn’t have to work for almost two years. Exactly I have given away almost two years of salary with out even a dollar returned. So this year I am giving advice, time, energy and love. If that is not enough than I am sorry. You will have to get it from someone else.

Remember how I said when I got the opportunity to do Extreme Makeover I had to put my pride aside. Well that is what you are going to have to do too. You will have to give up being prideful or caring about what other people think of you. You will have to have enough self-esteem to go forward with out any support. You have to know that what you want is worth everything you have. Did you hear what I just said. Know that what you want is worth everything you have. So if you believe your dreams are bigger than what you have right now. Sacrifice. Tell God he can have all of it if you really believe there is more to come. It’s time for you to learn The Art of Starting Over and feel good doing it. I’m with you all the way. Let’s go.
